Leaning Into Seasonality: Growing in Cold Weather
Many flowers I grow need the hard freeze of winter to grow up healthy. It might seem cliche, but they are also a great reminder of how much growth happens where we can’t see it. All winter, the flower’s roots serve as an anchor, steadying it until spring.
Flowers that thrive in this cycle of fall planting, winter dormancy, and early spring blooms are called hardy annuals. If you can believe it, snow is a fantastic insulator for flowers. They are quickly becoming my favorites. Their tiny leaves poking out of the snow keeps me hopeful during winter, especially the dreary January/February slog when it seems like the days will never get longer again.
What keeps you anchored and hopeful during the winters of your life?
