Midnight in Brooklyn: My Not-So-Secret Garden Life

Blog about growing plants in my closet and backyard, hacking the payout to fit the max number of plants, early wake ups and late bedtimes to squeeze everything in. Dedication is not just working long hours, it's curiosity sustained over a long period of time.

Listen, we need to talk about my closet. Not the cute coat collection you see when you come over – I'm talking about the secret plant nursery I've MacGyver'd into my spare closet. Picture this: grow lights zip-tied to wire shelving, humidity domes made from repurposed takeout containers, and about 200 sweet pea seedlings living their best life between last season's boots.

Why the closet garden? Because when you're growing flowers in the city, you get creative with your space. My backyard is already maxed out with raised beds (shoutout to my neighbors who pretend not to notice me tetris-ing in 'just one more' planting box). But these flowers? They needed a head start before spring, and my plant mom instincts kicked in hard.

So now my schedule looks like this: 5 AM check on the closet babies, 6 AM garden rounds before my teaching job, 8 PM evening waterings, and occasional midnight emergency runs when the humidity dome tips over (it happens more than I'd like to admit). But here's the thing about dedication – it's not just about the long hours. It's about that 3 AM moment when you're researching optimal germination temperatures for Iceland poppies because you just need to know. It's about that sustained curiosity that keeps you trying new things, even when your living room looks like a garden center exploded in it.
